Winnipeg Crime Statistics Update

This is the first crime stats update for 2017. It’s too early to see any significant trends.

el-caminoy

Not sure what the hell is going on there. Where is Mel Gibson and Danny Glover when you need them? Archives photo.

The homicide rate has doubled so far, but that is because this year there has been two, as opposed to one at this time last year. Car thefts are way up, but that is due to a bunch of nincompoops leaving their cars running as they run into Tim’s coffee store for a java. This happens because the weather is cold, and the citizens want to keep the cars warm. Lowlife opportunists pounce on the chance to go for a joy ride. Shootings are down, one less than last year.

We will have to allow more time to give the crime trends time to level out. Two more months should do it.

Be careful out there. The Assiniboine River Trail below.

Looks like some Zombie Nazis street gang. Hope our Winnipeg Police Service gang unit is looking into it.

Last year’s statistics minus one homicide.

Never realized we had a Gary Busey doppelganger detective with the City police.

A Trip to The Forks in Winnipeg: Skating Trail is back open and a surprise, a Crokicurl Ring!

Due to the unseasonably warm weather in southern Manitoba the last couple weeks, The Forks skating trail turned into slush and was closed. But with some cold air blowing down from Hudson Bay the trail is back in business.

The skating trail always has new creative features. This is a huge orange wall made up of plastic orange strips, the sun reflects on it creating what looks like neon lights.

There is always people learning how to skate. Assisted by chairs with skis.

Then I came across the Crokicurl Ring.

Crokicurl combines two iconic Canadian pastimes, crokinole and curling.

Crokinole is a dexterity board game similar in various ways to pitchnut, carrom, marbles, and shove ha’ penny, with elements of shuffleboard and curling reduced to table-top size. Players take turns shooting discs across the circular playing surface, trying to have their discs land in the higher-scoring regions of the board, while also attempting to knock away opposing discs.

Winnipeg Forks Skating Trail Superb

I checked out the skating trail today as the weather was very agreeable. Warmer temps allowed a skate without having to wear astronaut-like clothing. The trail is well groomed and the ice was smooth as glass. For a Tuesday afternoon there was a surprisingly large turnout.

The trail isn’t as long as past years. But it does cover areas of the two rivers, Red and Assiniboine. It has been a few years since the Assiniboine River segment has been open, strong currents and mild weather the cause. There is also a couple hockey rinks right at the Forks harbor.

The Stimulating Contrasts Living in the Great White North

Living in northern climes can be challenging, with the bitter cold and icy northerly winds. But, those of us who live here, get to experience the many variations of Mother Nature. The good and the bad.

Winnipeg is located just above the 49th parallel, almost in the middle of North America, the northern part of the middle. The city gets every conceivable kind of weather possible. Extremely hot and humid summers, a brief spring and fall, and very cold long winters. Even the odd tornado. But as the hedonistic sage once said: variety is the spice of life. Change is interesting.
