Tossin & Turnin

I couldn’t sleep at all last night
Got to thinkin’ of you
Baby things weren’t right
Well I was tossin’ and turnin’
Turnin’ and tossin’
a-tossin’ and turnin’ all night

kicked the blankets on the floor
Turned my pillow upside down
I never never did before
’cause I was tossin’ and turnin’
Turnin’ and tossin’
a-tossin’ and turnin’ all night

Jumped out of bed
Turned on the light
I pulled down the shade
Went to the kitchen for a bite
Rolled up the shade
Turned off the light
I jumped back into bed
It was the middle of the night

The clock downstairs was strikin’ four
Couldn’t get you off my mind
I heard the milkman at the door
’cause I was tossin’ and turnin’
Turnin’ and tossin’
a-tossin’ and turnin’ all night

Jumped out of bed
Turned on the light
I pulled down the shade
Went to the kitchen for a bite
Rolled up the shade
Turned off the light
I jumped back into bed
It was the middle of the night

The clock downstairs was strikin’ four
Couldn’t get you off my mind
I heard the milkman at the door
’cause I was tossin’ and turnin’
Turnin’ and tossin’
a-tossin’ and turnin’ all, yay, yay, yay
I was a-tossin’ and turnin’

Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc, nicknamed “The Maid of Orléans” is considered a heroine of France for her role during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred Years’ War, and was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint. Joan of Arc was born to Jacques d’Arc and Isabelle, a peasant family, at Domrémy in north-east France. Joan said she received visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination late in the Hundred Years’ War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent Joan to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence after the siege was lifted only nine days later. Several additional swift victories led to Charles VII’s coronation at Reims. This long-awaited event boosted French morale and paved the way for the final French victory.

On 23 May 1430, she was captured at Compiègne by the Burgundian faction which was allied with the English. She was later handed over to the English, and then put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon on a variety of charges. After Cauchon declared her guilty she was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431, dying at about nineteen years of age.

If joan of arc
Had a heart
Would she give it as a gift

To such as me
Who longs to see
How an angel ought to be

Her dream’s to give
Her heart away
Like an orphan on a wave

She cared so much
She offered up
Her body to the grave

The Jukebox

In San Francisco in 1890, Louis Glass and William S. Arnold invented the nickel-in-the-slot phonograph, the first of which was an Edison Class M Electric Phonograph retrofitted with a device patented under the name of Coin Actuated Attachment for Phonograph. The music was heard via one of four listening tubes.

Early designs, upon receiving a coin, unlocked the mechanism, allowing the listener to turn a crank that simultaneously wound the spring motor and placed the reproducer’s stylus in the starting groove. Frequently, exhibitors would equip many of these machines with listening tubes (acoustic headphones) and array them in “phonograph parlors”, allowing the patron to select between multiple records, each played on its own machine. Some machines even contained carousels and other mechanisms for playing multiple records. Most machines were capable of holding only one musical selection, the automation coming from the ability to play that one selection at will. In 1918 Hobart C. Niblack patented an apparatus that automatically changed records, leading to one of the first selective jukeboxes being introduced in 1927 by the Automated Musical Instrument Company, later known as AMI.

The term jukebox came into use in the United States beginning in 1940, apparently derived from the familiar usage “juke joint”, derived from the Gullah word “juke” or “joog” meaning disorderly, rowdy, or wicked. As it applies to the ‘use of a jukebox’, the terms juking (v.) and juker (n.) are the correct expressions.

Song-popularity counters told the owner of the machine the number of times each record was played (A and B side were generally not distinguished), with the result that popular records remained, while lesser-played songs could be replaced.

Wallboxes were an important, and profitable, part of any jukebox installation. Serving as a remote control, they enabled patrons to select tunes from their table or booth. One example is the Seeburg 3W1, introduced in 1949 as companion to the 100-selection Model M100A jukebox. Stereo sound became popular in the early 1960s, and wallboxes of the era were designed with built-in speakers to provide patrons a sample of this latest technology.

Jukeboxes were most popular from the 1940s through the mid-1960s, particularly during the 1950s. By the middle of the 1940s, three-quarters of the records produced in America went into jukeboxes. While often associated with early rock and roll music, their popularity extends back much earlier, including classical music, opera and the swing music era. In 1977, The Kinks recorded a song called “Jukebox Music” for their album Sleepwalker.

Many manufacturers produced jukeboxes, including 1890s Wurlitzer, 1920s Seeburg, 1930s “Rock-Ola” whose name is actually based on that of the company founder, David Cullen Rockola, Sound Leisure and Crosley.

Two companies still remain today in the manufacture of classically styled jukeboxes. Rockola based in California and Sound Leisure based in Leeds in the UK. Both companies manufacture jukeboxes based on a CD playing mechanism however in April 2016 Sound Leisure showed a prototype of the “Vinyl Rocket” at the UK Classic Car Show. It stated that it would start production of the 140 7″ vinyl selector (70records) in summer of the same year.

1952 Seeburg M100C – This was the jukebox exterior used in the credit sequences for the sitcom Happy Days in seasons 1-10. It played up to fifty 45 rpm records making it a 100-play. It was a very colorful jukebox with chrome glass tubes on the front, mirrors in the display, and rotating animation in the pilasters.

Driver Caught Using Carpool Lane with Eerily Realistic Mannequin Riding Shotgun

Authorities in California couldn’t help but marvel at the length one motorist went to in order to use the carpool lane when the driver was caught with an incredibly realistic mannequin riding shotgun. The surprising stop reportedly occurred last month when Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez was keeping an eye on traffic passing through the community of Glendora along Interstate 210. As an otherwise innocuous Toyota Tacoma zipped past him in the carpool lane, he caught sight of the passenger in the vehicle and sensed that something was amiss.

Jimenez’s police instincts were proven correct when he pulled the driver over and, upon walking up to the vehicle, discovered that there was a mannequin in the passenger seat. The life-size doll, which sported a full head of hair and some remarkably realistic wrinkles on its face, was clad in a red flannel shirt, a Cleveland Indians baseball cap, glasses, and a face mask. Taken together, it’s actually rather impressive that Jimenez caught on to the ruse, especially since the vehicle presumably passed him at a high rate of speed.

Sharing a photo of the mannequin on Facebook, the California Highway Patrol of Baldwin Park declared that the mannequin was “by far, one of the best dummies we have ever seen” and joked that “to clarify, we are referring to this fake passenger.” Despite crediting the driver with going the proverbial extra mile to get into the carpool lane and applauding the person for going so far as to equip the doll with a face mask so that it was “following CDC guidelines,” cops still issued him a citation for the illegal maneuver.

‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin – rest his soul – pushed it to the limit many times

In this classic episode of ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve handles the deadliest snake in the world, the Inland Taipan or Fierce Snake. He is taking a major chance in the video below, one bite and he is a dead man. But that is how Steve operated.

The inland taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus), also commonly known as the western taipan, the small-scaled snake or the fierce snake, is a species of extremely venomous snake in the family Elapidae. The species is endemic to semi-arid regions of central east Australia. Aboriginal Australians living in those regions named the snake Dandarabilla. It was first described by Frederick McCoy in 1879 and then by William John Macleay in 1882, but for the next 90 years, it was a mystery to the scientific community; no further specimens were found, and virtually nothing was added to the knowledge of this species until its rediscovery in 1972.

Based on the median lethal dose value in mice, the venom of the inland taipan is by far the most toxic of any snake – much more so than even that of sea snakes – and it has the most toxic venom of any reptile when tested on human heart cell culture. The inland taipan is a specialist hunter of mammals, so its venom is specially adapted to kill warm-blooded species. It is estimated that one bite possesses enough lethality to kill at least 100 fully grown humans, It is an extremely fast and agile snake that can strike instantly with extreme accuracy, often striking multiple times in the same attack, and it envenomates in almost every case.

Eerie ‘Doll Altar’ Found in England

There is also a Barbie doll tied to a tree. Video below.

A woman walking through a wooded area in England stumbled upon a rather unsettling scene in the form of an eerie collection of baby dolls that had been fastened to trees as part of what appeared to be a makeshift altar. The eerie discovery was reportedly made late last month as the witness, who opted not to reveal her name perhaps for fear of running afoul of whoever crafted the chilling display, was visiting an infamous forested area known as Cannock Chase.

Happy to be escaping her house for a respite from the strict coronavirus lockdown currently enacted in England, the woman set about exploring a spot which was once the grounds of a hospital that had been in operation about a century ago and later served as a temporary village, of sorts, for miners. Now an abandoned patch of wilderness, whatever creepy vibes may have been in the air were undoubtedly compounded by the strange scene which the woman found.

“As I dug through the undergrowth I saw these dolls,” she recalled, “they were in some sort of order. Their dresses were all raggedy and they were all tied and nailed to the trees.” Fortunately for those who appreciate footage of nightmarish scenes, the woman managed to film a bit of the bizarre ‘altar,’ which consisted of several of the toys seemingly arranged in a circle around a snow-covered board that sported candles atop it.

While one could be forgiven for being frightened by the unnerving assortment of dolls, the woman actually found the display rather compelling and later returned to the spot a second time. “It wasn’t that scary,” she observed, revealing that during her second visit to the site, she “talked to the dolls and wished the children who used to live in the mining village eternal rest.” The purpose of the puzzling scene is a mystery with some suggesting that it is connected to witchcraft while others argue that it is merely an elaborate prank meant to scare people walking through the woods.
