The Lappet-faced Vulture

The lappet-faced vulture or Nubian vulture (Torgos tracheliotos) is an Old World vulture belonging to the bird order Accipitriformes, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is the only member of the genus Torgos. It is not closely related to the superficially similar New World vultures, and does not share the good sense of smell of some members of that group.

This species is patchily distributed through much of Africa, though it is absent from much of the central and western parts of the continent and declining elsewhere in its range. The lappet-faced vulture breeds in Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. On the Arabian Peninsula, it breeds in Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. It is also present in Gambia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Benin, the Central African Republic and Angola.

As with all vultures the beak and face area are extremely ugly. But this bird has redeeming legs. Almost looks like they are wearing cowboy chaps.

There used to be a catwalk from a cliff that connected to the staircase. People could then get from the cliff down to the beach.

That’s it, back to Winnipeg: ‘Simpsons’ give another nod to city in new episode

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were referenced in a recent episode of 'The Simpsons.'.

You may not be able to find Springfield, the home of the animated Simpson family, on a map, but the long-running cartoon’s writers certainly know where to find Winnipeg.

The acclaimed TV series referenced the city — in this case, its back-to-back champion CFL team — again in its latest episode Sunday night.

A Winnipeg Blue Bombers-branded bus makes an appearance in the episode of The Simpsons, as a group of American football players decide to try their luck up north in the CFL.

The nod to the Grey Cup champs isn’t the first time Winnipeg has been referenced on the popular animated show.

In the 1996 episode Bart on the Road, a scene featuring a disgruntled parent yelling, “That’s it, back to Winnipeg” is perhaps the best-known Winnipeg reference — but Simpsons characters actually visited Manitoba in 2005’s Midnight Rx.

The city has also been referenced frequently in films and TV series, from a nod in Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps to episodes of CheersThe Sopranos and The Office.

Shark Movie Feeding Frenzy

The shark movie is a staple in the B-movie genre. Ever since JAWS the ever hungry killer shark has been on the prowl. The titles are quite funny as the list below demonstrates.

The Last Shark (1981), Shark Night 3D (2011), Sand Sharks (2012 TV Movie) , Avalanche Sharks (2014 TV Movie), 2-Headed Shark Attack (2012 Video), Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009 Video), Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus (2010 Video), Dinoshark (2010 TV Movie), Ghost Shark (2013 TV Movie), Cruel Jaws (1995 TV Movie), Shark Attack 3: Megalodon (2002 Video), Shark in Venice (2008), Sharknado (2013 TV Movie), Sharktopus (2010 TV Movie) to name a few.

I found another obscure movie that has a funky title:

‘Comfort Town’

The stunning ‘Comfort town’ in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev looks like a real-life LEGO city.

Ever dreamt of visiting a real-life LEGO land? Well, coming close enough is ‘ The Comfort Town’ in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev which features low-rise apartment blocks, each painted a different pastel color. Yes, that’s right!

Creating a myriad of blues, greens, yellows, reds, and salmon pinks in the region of dull grey Soviet buildings, the Town is designed by Dmytro Vasyliev, Aleksandr Popov, Olga Alfiorova from the Eastern European firm Archimatika. They were apparently given a free hand to transform the area into an idyllic place to live, and have they done a fab job or what!

A city within a city, the town houses cafes, shops, and offices on the lower floors of each apartment. It also features a 14,763-square-foot retail section with a fitness club and a 3.7-acre outdoor sports facility. The cluster of 180 buildings further features space for leisure activities – such as five-a-side football and long streets, stretching from one side of the Town to the other.

The project operates on the idea of a city-within-a-city, housing everything from shops and restaurants to schools and gyms. As the property sales brochure says, ‘Your little slice of Europe in Kyiv’, its 8,500 apartments and landscaped courtyards have been designed to be culturally closer to Europe than to Ukraine’s Soviet heritage.
