F/A-18B Hornet jets take off in 30 – 40 knot crosswind

Two Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornet jets take off in 30 – 40 knot crosswind from Illawarra Regional Airport in Australia

Filmed at Wing Over Illawarra airshow 2014, at Illawarra Regional Airport, in New South Wales, on May 4, the following footage shows two RAAF F/A-18B Hornets taking off in strong crosswinds from the airfield located about 50 kilometers to the southeast of Sydney, Australia.

Strong crosswinds prevented the majority of aerobatic displays at WOI airshow. Nevertheless, the two Hornets were able to launch, even if sensibly shaken by the 30 – 40 knot crosswind!

Note the skid marks (or tracks left in the dust) left on the runway by two Hornets!

The Jet Plane that Shot Itself Down

An F11F-1 Tiger, tail number 138620, is a plane that became famous as being the first documented incident of a jet plane that shot itself down!

On September 21st, 1956, Thomas W. Attridge Jr, a Grumman test pilot, was conducting test-firing of the aircraft’s four 20mm cannon (Colt Mark-12) at around Mach 1.0, aiming for a patch of open ocean off the coast of Long Island, NY.

Starting his run at 20,000ft, Attridge entered a shallow dive at 20° nose-down. When he reached 13,000ft, he pulled the trigger for a four second cannon burst, advanced the throttle to afterburner, steepened his descent, and fired a second burst to empty the magazine belts. Whilst firing, his plane continued in the descent, passing through to 7,000ft

About a minute (and 2.7 miles) after the first volley, he was hit by the first bullets he’d fired himself!

Even though the bullets were initially travelling well over 2,000 mph (the speed of the plane plus the muzzle velocity of the cannon), they slowed down quickly due to drag. Also, Attridge’s plane continued to accelerate in afterburner fueled descent, and the cruel consequence of these coincidences was that both entities ended up occupying the same space at the same time. Unlucky!

Attridge became aware of the incident when the plane rattled, and his windshield buckled inwards, He’d been hit.

Attridge throttled back to slow down and prevent cave-in of the windshield (His thoughts were that maybe he’d had a bird strike), and attempt to fly back to Grumman’s Long Island field at 200 knots. He radioed that a gash in the outboard side of the right engine’s intake lip was the only apparent sign of damage, other than for the glass but, more worryingly, only 78 percent engine power was available without severe roughness.

Two miles out, at 1,200 ft with flaps and wheels down, it became evident from the sink rate that the runway could not be attained at this low power setting. Attridge applied power, and is quoted as saying the engine made a noise like “a Hoover vaccum cleaner picking up gravel from a rug.”

Shortly after, the engine lost power completely. He pulled up the gear and dead-sticked a landing, settling into trees, half a mile short of the runway. He gouged a path 300 feet long in the decelerating impact (losing a right wing and stabilizer in the process); fire broke out from the unburnt fuel. Despite injuries, Attridge managed to cut himself free of the plane and get far enough away from the crash. The Sikorsky S-58 helicopter dispatched to retrieve him also damaged its blades from contact with foliage during the rescue.

A post-accident investigation revealed that Attridge’s aircraft had been hit by three of the 20mm bullets he’d fired. The first penetrated his windshield, the second punctured the nose, and the third damaged the right engine intake, struck the inlet guide vanes, and lodged in the first stage compressor of the engine. This bullet was recovered and a picture of it is shown on the left.

Attridge survived the crash with a shattered leg, and three broken vertebrae. He successfully returned to flight status less than six months later, and continued on to a long and distinguished career in the aerospace industry, becoming the project manager of the LEM-3, the first lunar module rated for human flight (flown on Apollo 9), and later as VP of Grumman Ecosystems, the company’s environmental management and research venture.

Blue Angels

Interestingly, the F11F saw limited service as it was eclipsed by two more modern aircraft: F8U Crusader and F4H Phantom II. Tigers finished their service in the Naval Air Training Command and as demonstration aircraft with the Blue Angels, who flew the F11F during the period 1957-1969.

Jet Dodges Trio of Tornadoes

An amazing piece of footage from Sochi, Russia shows a passenger jet weaving around three ominous-looking tornadoes that had formed over the Black Sea.

The jaw-dropping maneuver occurred earlier this week when an astounding 12 such water spouts formed at the same time in the area.

As this was unfolding, observers on the ground were amazed to see the airliner come barreling through the sky towards three of the tornadoes.

In either a remarkable display of dexterity or simply the result of a clever camera angle, footage of the encounter shows the jet deftly avoid the water spouts as it heads toward a nearby airport.

Although the view from below was rather breathtaking, it paled in comparison to what those aboard the plane were seeing, but we’re guessing they weren’t exactly too thrilled by the sight.

There must have been some irregular bowel movements on that plane.

Russian Navy Jet Does Really Fast Low Pass

In the recent past we have published several videos showing pretty dangerous low passes: a Su-27 flying really low over a group of people after performing a low approach at an airbase in Ukraine; a Su-25 Frogfoot buzzing a group of female soldiers posing for a photograph; another one performing a low passage along a taxiway of a military airfield in northwestern Ukraine; a Mig-29 overflying pro-Russia separatist blocking rails, an Ilyushin Il-76 buzzing some Su-25s and Frogfoots returning the favor while buzzing the tower; an Mi-17 helicopter flying among the cars on a highway and another fully armed Mig-29 Fulcrum in the livery of the Ukrainian Falcons aerobatic display team flying over an apron at an airbase in Ukraine.

However, Russian Air Force and Naval Aviation pilots love flying low and be filmed in the process too. Not only with the Su-24 Fencer, the type shown buzzing cars on a highway in a video that went viral few years ago causing military prosecutors to investigate flight records and safety measures carried out at military airfields. This time with a Su-33 Flanker-D.

The Sukhoi Su-33 is an all-weather carrier-based highly maneuverable air defence fighter based on the Su-27 “Flanker” and initially known as Su-27K. It has larger (folding) wings, upgraded engines, twin nose wheel, strengthened undercarriage for blue waters ops.

The Su-33 equips the only Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and, as reported last year, a Russian Navy Su-33 Flanker carrier-based multirole aircraft crashed during flight operations from the carrier at its inaugural combat cruise in the Mediterranean Sea, to support the air strikes in Syria, on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016.

According to the report, the combat plane crashed at its second attempt to land on the aircraft carrier in good weather conditions (visibility +10 kilometers, Sea State 4, wind at 12 knots): the arresting wire snapped and failed to stop the aircraft that fell short of the bow of the warship.

The pilot successfully ejected and was picked up by a Russian Navy search and rescue helicopter.

The Chinese Shenyang J-15, equipping the refurbished ex-Soviet Kuznetsov class carrier Varyag now “Liaoning” is also extensively based on the Su-27 and Su-33.

Anyway, the following video show a Russian Navy Su-33 at some airbase in Russia, performing a couple of really low passes buzzing the cameraman. Cool footage, probably not too safe.

Falcons on a Plane

Falconry has been popular for many centuries around the world. Falconry is the use of Falcons to hunt other creatures. It is especially popular in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar in the Middle East.

The sport of falconry began over 5,000 years ago in Iran, and spread over the centuries to East and West. The sport was introduced to Qatar through Bedouin tribes who used the birds as a tool for hunting. They discovered that it was much easier to allow the raptors to take down birds migrating across the Arabian Peninsula than it was to shoot them down themselves. This Bedouin method of falconry set the basis for the modern version of the sport practiced in Qatar.

falcons1-2

Although, over the centuries, falconry has virtually disappeared from the European continent, the sport lives on in the Middle East. In Qatar, you can still purchase falcons in downtown Doha at falcon souqs or through private dealers. The best raptors can cost thousands of dollars and may even be issued their own Qatari passports to ensue they are not stolen or taken out of the country without the owner’s permission. Due to these elaborate methods of theft prevention, it is not uncommon for you to be seated beside a full-grown falcon when travelling on a Middle Eastern airliner.

In a Qatar Airways economy cabin of a flight between Baku, Azerbaijan, and Doha, Qatar, a group of Qatari men sit on the plane with their treasured birds. The men practise the art of falconry and to escape the heat of Qatar flew for a week to the cooler weathers of Azerbaijan to let the birds fly. The birds cost over US$10,000 each, have micro-chips in their legs so they can find them if they fly off and documents allowing them to travel abroad.

UFO Disclosure: do we really want the truth about what the government knows?

In UFO circles the hot topic that always resurfaces is Disclosure! Disclosure is the idea that governments are suppressing information that they possess about UFO’s and space aliens. But do we really want to know what they know? They definitely know a lot more than they let out. But would Disclosure satisfy the masses? Or would Disclosure scare the holy crap out of an already paranoid public.

Without a doubt something very strange happens in the world’s skies from time to time. There are tens of thousands of unexplained sightings of highly unusual aerial phenomena from all over the planet. Most sightings can be explained away as very anomalous natural phenomena, such a strange cloud formations, bright stars, atmospheric aberrations, misidentified military aircraft and a myriad of other real things, but terrestrial in origin.

acellufo1 (2)

However, there are some compelling cases that boggle the mind. The Belgium UFO wave in 1989 and 1990, the Loring air force base sightings, the Rendlesham forest incident in 1984 where U.S. military personnel observed UFO’s close-up, the Iranian fighter jet encounter in the seventies, other U.S. military base encounters observed by hundreds of service people. Then there was the Phoenix lights in 1997, observed by hundreds of citizens and then Arizona governor Fife Symington.  Symington only came forward years later when he was out of office. Symington stated what he saw was definitely not flares released by fighter jets, as the official explanation said. The Washington D.C. UFO flap in 1952 when unknown objects were not only sighted but picked up on radar, President Truman issued a shoot-down order to the air force. The Washington D.C. incident was eventually explained away by the air force as extremely unusual atmospheric conditions. There are many more cases and examples of very intriguing sightings and reports.

The government absolutely knows more than it releases. But I am quite sure they don’t have alien spacecraft in secret hangers or bodies of dead Gray aliens. For the hundredth time, UFO’s did not crash at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. That story came to fruition by some creative con artist authors, most notably Stanton Friedman.  What was discovered at Roswell was fully disclosed by the air force in the 1990’s, it was, without a doubt, the wreckage of a massive super-secret balloon train called Project Mogul. The evidence for Mogul at Roswell is irrefutable. These craft from millions of light years away or from alternate dimensions would not crash when they get hit by lightning on Earth!!  Many people make very big money perpetuating the Roswell myth.  The hell with Roswell, there are many other incidents that are a thousand times more compelling.

bad alien3

What does the government know? The military in advanced countries have to have evidence gathered from radar, air force pilot sightings (unlike civilian pilots who for the most part do not report sightings because it could ruin their careers, military pilots have to report what they see), satellite sensors and all kinds of other intelligence gathering technology. This information is kept confidential. But why? Because the military and government realize whatever these things are, they are light years more advanced than anything we can imagine. Therefore the military is powerless in trying to confront the phenomena or understand it. Generals and top C.I.A. brass have come to the realization that there is something tangible out there, but they can’t do anything about it.

If the general public was told that the powerful U.S. military was hopelessly inferior to this remarkable phenomena it could create a feeling of angst and panic among the population. So the government always tries to explain it away with illogical stories about bright Venus or a flock of geese reflecting moonlight. They don’t want to panic the masses.

What if the masses starting construing the Aliens as malevolent, or even belligerent. People would start jumping off bridges. Bad Space Aliens that could destroy humankind in seconds! Oh my!

Many abduction cases describe the Aliens as cold creatures that in effect torture captured humans. Not nice guys. I have always perceived the Alien abduction stories as nothing more than sleep paralysis or other hallucinations. But more cases are coming to light where groups of people are being abducted at the same time, and they remember the exact same things. They even remember strangers in the abduction scenario that they come across back in regular life. This abduction situation is very weird.

aliens5

Nearly all abduction reports are that the Alien creatures performing the physical inspections do it in a removed and antipathetic manner. These physicals are often very painful and psychologically terrifying according to the abductees.

It is not just humans being abducted. Animals of all sorts are reported to be picked up and inspected. The cattle mutilations , as far as I’m concerned, are full of hyperbole and conjecture. I think this phenomena can be explained as scavengers and other natural occurrences. Not to say that the odd cow isn’t abducted and then returned to its green pasture, this may be possible.

We will never see complete disclosure of what the C.I.A. has on file regarding UFOs. As long as the American public continues to be paranoid and gullible the risks are just too great. 2012 had many Americans spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on underground bunkers and shelters stockpiled with food.  Many fundamental Christians believe the Rapture is around the corner.  The End Days are closing in. The government doesn’t want to add fuel to the hysteria fire already out there by proclaiming that the Space Aliens could swat us like a fly anytime they want to.

World’s Largest Miniature Airport in Hamburg, Germany

airport1

The world’s largest model airport has opened at Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany, which is also home to the world’s largest model railway landscape.

The model airport is based off of Hamburg’s Fuhlsbüttel International airport.

airport2

In the past years, embedded between Knuffingen and Switzerland, Miniatur Wunderland’s latest layout arose – our passenger airport. After more than 6 years of construction, it was inaugurated on May 4th 2011, at last. The development of the Airport began in June 2005, already. In 2008 the planning phase was finalized, and the final building plans were worked out.
Since the 22nd of August 2008 the plan was lying on the layout base, initiating the construction phase, officially. The layout arose right in front of our visitor’s eyes. Not only for aviation and technology fans, the impressive Airport is the new Wunderland highlight. Up to 40 different aircraft (from Cessna to Airbus A 380) are taxiing independently on this Airport to the gates. They are also being moved back from the gates by push-back vehicles in order to taxi to the runway. There they are accelerating and taking off or landing respectively. Each aircraft is equipped with original lights and original, realistic turbine sounds at least in the take-off phase (otherwise the noise level would be unbearable).

Some very big little airplanes

Model aircraft have gotten very big. Big enough that they have to be powered by miniature jet engines.

model7

 F-14 Tomcat

A major development is the use of small jet turbine engines in hobbyist models, both surface and air. Model-scale turbines resemble simplified versions of turbojet engines found on commercial aircraft, but are in fact new designs (not based upon scaled-down commercial jet engines.)

The first hobbyist-developed turbine was developed and flown in the 1980s by Gerald Jackman in England, but only recently has commercial production (from companies such as Evojet in Germany) made turbines readily available for purchase. Turbines require specialized design and precision-manufacturing techniques (some designs for model aircraft have been built from recycled turbocharger units from car engines), and consume a mixture of A1 jet fuel and synthetic turbine engine or motorcycle-engine oil.

These qualities, and the turbine’s high-thrust output, makes owning and operating a turbine-powered aircraft prohibitively expensive for most hobbyists, as well as many nations’ national aeromodeling clubs (as with the USA’s AMA) requiring their users to be certified to know how to safely and properly operate the engines they intend to use for such a model. Jet-powered models attract large crowds at organized events; their authentic sound and high speed make for excellent crowd pleasers.
