The Hybrid Air Vehicles Airlander 10, originally developed as the HAV 304, is a hybrid airship designed and built by British manufacturer Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV). Comprising a helium airship with auxiliary wing and tail surfaces, it flies using both aerostatic and aerodynamic lift and is powered by four diesel engine-driven ducted propellers.

The HAV 304 was originally built for the United States Army’s Long Endurance Multi-intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) programme. Its maiden flight took place in 2012 at Lakehurst, New Jersey, in the US. In 2013, the LEMV project was cancelled by the US Army.

HAV reacquired the airship and brought it back to Cardington Airfield in England. It was reassembled and modified for civilian use, and in this form was redesignated the Airlander 10. The modified aircraft completed design certification testing before being written off when it came loose from its moorings in a high wind on 18 November 2017 at Cardington Airfield.

A production run of the Airlander 10 is now planned for 2025.

The Lappet-faced Vulture

The lappet-faced vulture or Nubian vulture (Torgos tracheliotos) is an Old World vulture belonging to the bird order Accipitriformes, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is the only member of the genus Torgos. It is not closely related to the superficially similar New World vultures, and does not share the good sense of smell of some members of that group.

This species is patchily distributed through much of Africa, though it is absent from much of the central and western parts of the continent and declining elsewhere in its range. The lappet-faced vulture breeds in Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. On the Arabian Peninsula, it breeds in Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. It is also present in Gambia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Benin, the Central African Republic and Angola.

As with all vultures the beak and face area are extremely ugly. But this bird has redeeming legs. Almost looks like they are wearing cowboy chaps.

You may not be able to find Springfield, the home of the animated Simpson family, on a map, but the long-running cartoon’s writers certainly know where to find Winnipeg.

The acclaimed TV series referenced the city — in this case, its back-to-back champion CFL team — again in its latest episode Sunday night.

A Winnipeg Blue Bombers-branded bus makes an appearance in the episode of The Simpsons, as a group of American football players decide to try their luck up north in the CFL.

The nod to the Grey Cup champs isn’t the first time Winnipeg has been referenced on the popular animated show.

In the 1996 episode Bart on the Road, a scene featuring a disgruntled parent yelling, “That’s it, back to Winnipeg” is perhaps the best-known Winnipeg reference — but Simpsons characters actually visited Manitoba in 2005’s Midnight Rx.
