The North American Cave Lion

The American lion (Panthera leo atrox) – also known as the North American cave lion – is an extinct subspecies of lion that lived in North America during the Pleistocene epoch (340,000 to 11,000 years ago). Genetic analysis has revealed that it was the sister lineage to the Eurasian cave lion. It was part of the Pleistocene megafauna, a wide variety of large mammals that lived at the time. The majority of American lion fossils have come from the La Brea Tar Pits.

The American lion was about 25% larger than the modern African lion, making it one of the largest known felids.

lion2

The American lion is estimated to have measured 1.6 to 2.5 m (5 ft 3 in to 8 ft 2 in) from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail and stood 1.2 m (3.9 ft) at the shoulder. Thus, it was smaller than its contemporary competitor, the giant short-faced bear, which was the largest carnivoran of North America at the time, and arguably the saber-toothed cat, Smilodon populator, which may have weighed up to 400 kg (880 lb). In 2008, the American lion was estimated to weigh up to 420 kg (930 lb). A study in 2009 showed an average weight of 256 kg (564 lb) for males and 351 kg (774 lb) for the largest specimen analyzed.[9] A study in 2012 estimated a range of 235–523 kg (518–1,153 pounds) for males and 175–365 kg (386–805 pounds) for females, which suggests that the lion was heavier than Smilodon.

lion1

About 80 American lion individuals have been recovered from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, so their morphology is well known. Their features strongly resemble those of modern lions, but they were considerably larger, and are believed to have been the largest subspecies of lion.

Preserved skin remains found with skeletal material thought to be from the American lion in caves in Argentina indicate that the animal was reddish in color. Cave paintings from in El Ceibo in the province of Santa Cruz seem to confirm this, and reduce the possibility of confusion with fossil jaguars, as similar cave paintings show the latter cat accurately as being yellow in color.

lion3

The earliest lions known in the Americas south of Alaska are from the Sangamonian Stage – the last interglacial period – following which, the American lion spread from Alberta to Maryland, reaching as far south as Chiapas, Mexico. It was generally not found in the same areas as the jaguar, which favored forests over open habitats. It was absent from eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, perhaps due to the presence of dense boreal forests in the region. The American lion was formerly believed to have colonized northwestern South America as part of the Great American Interchange. However, the fossil remains found in the tar pits of Talara, Peru actually belong to an unusually large jaguar. On the other hand, fossils of a large felid from late Pleistocene localities in southern Chile and Argentina traditionally identified as an extinct subspecies of jaguar, Panthera onca mesembrina, have been reported to be remains of the American lion.

Winnipeg Jets Fans Getting Antsy Waiting For Playoffs

The NHL playoffs have arrived. The Winnipeg Jets are in the thick of it. Since relocating from Atlanta to Winnipeg back in 2011 the Jets have made the playoffs once. Back in 2015 they lost 4 straight games to the Anaheim Ducks. Didn’t win a game. But this year could be different.

The drastically improved team this year finished 2nd overall in the league regular season. Suffice it to say the fans are hysterically excited. The Jets play the Minnesota Wild tomorrow night in the first game of the opening round. Expectations are high, but trepidation is also very apparent. The nerves are tingling, hearts are pounding, and the sweat is flowing. Let it start!

I’m sure the Jets are ready. They are big and strong and very fast. They have also been honing their skills for the much anticipated playoff run.

There is a tradition that started in Winnipeg back in the 80’s where all the fans wear white for playoff games.

Wrong Way Ray!

Silo Demolition Goes Awry in Denmark

The planned demolition of a silo in Denmark took a literal turn for the worse when it toppled the wrong way and smashed into a pair of nearby buildings.

The bizarre scene unfolded in the town of Vordingborg, where a crowd had gathered to see the 175-foot-tall tower brought down by explosives.

However, their delight at the sight quickly faded when they realized that the falling silo was going in the wrong direction and headed right for a library and music school located next to the tower.

Incredible footage of the mishap shows the silo slowly tipping over in an almost agonizing fashion, clipping the buildings and blasting them with debris.

Thankfully, the area around the silo had been cleared well ahead of time and, therefore, no one was injured due to the incident.

The Pink Lake of Australia

Lake Hillier is a saline lake on the edge of Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago in the Goldfields-Esperance region, off the south coast of Western Australia. It is particularly notable for its pink colour. A long and thin shore divides the Southern Ocean from the lake.

Lake-Hillier-Landscape

Lake Hillier is about 600 metres (2,000 ft) in length by about 250 m (820 ft) in width. The lake is surrounded by a rim of sand and a dense woodland of paperbark and eucalyptus trees with a narrow strip of sand dunes covered by vegetation separating its northern edge from the northern coast of Middle Island. The most notable feature of the lake is its pink colour. The vibrant colour is permanent, and does not alter when the water is taken in a container. The pink colour is considered to be due to the presence of the organism Dunaliella salina. Air is the best mode of transportation for viewing the lake. At one point in its history the lake was used to collect salt.

lake1

Lake Hillier was visited by the Matthew Flinders’ expedition on 15 January 1802. Flinders’ journal entries are considered to be the first written records of the lake. Flinders observed the pink lake after ascending the island’s highest peak (now called Flinders Peak), describing the lake as follows:

In the north-eastern part was a small lake of a rose colour, the water of which, as I was informed by Mr. Thistle who visited it, was so saturated with salt that sufficient quantities were crystallised near the shores to load a ship. The specimen he brought on board was of a good quality, and required no other process than drying to be fit for use.

Flinders visited Middle Island again in May 1803; he intended “to stop a day or two in Goose-Island Bay, for the purposes of procuring geese for our sick people, seal oil for our lamps, and a few casks of salt from the lake on Middle Island”. It is reported that Flinders subsequently named the lake after William Hillier, a crew member of Investigator who died of dysentery on 20 May 1803 prior to the expedition’s departure from Middle Island.

In 1889, Edward Andrews investigated the commercial possibilities of producing salt from Lake Hillier, and briefly moved onto the island with both of his sons. They left after working the salt deposits for about one year.

The lake was subject to salt mining during the late 19th century. The salt mining enterprise is reported as failing for a number of reasons including “the toxicity of the salt collected for consumption”.

lake4

The only living organisms in Lake Hillier are microorganisms including Dunaliella salina, which causes the salt content in the lake to create a red dye which helps produce the colour, as well as red halophilic bacteria present in the salt crusts. Despite the unusual hue, the lake exhibits no known adverse effects upon humans. From above, the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink, but from the shoreline it appears more of a clear pink hue. The shoreline is also covered in salt crust deposits.

Despite the high salt content levels (comparable to those of the Dead Sea), Lake Hillier is safe to swim in. However, there are very few ways to reach Lake Hillier. Aeroplane scenic flights are the most common method, with 6 flights a day departing Esperance Airport, flying over Lake Hillier via the nearby Cape Le Grand National Park. Cruises are also an option for passengers wanting to visit the isolated lake, and surrounding forest area.

China’s first emperor has fallen flat on its face

BBC

This photo taken on April 7, 2018 shows workers lifting a toppled status of China's first emperor "Qin Shi Huang" in Binzhou in China's eastern Shandong province.

A giant statue of China’s first emperor has fallen flat on its face – all six tonnes of it.

The 19m (62ft) bronze cast of Qin Shi Huang was blown from its stone pedestal in Shandong province during high winds on Friday.

It landed face-first, crushing the head of the terracotta-warrior emperor “like a pancake”, according to state-run outlet Global Times.

Workers quickly arrived with cranes to remove the multi-tonne metal remains.

This photo taken on September 7, 2015 shows a status of China's first emperor "Qin Shi Huang" in Binzhou in China's eastern Shandong province.

Qin Shi Huang was the founder of China’s Qin Dynasty and is credited with being the first man to unite much of modern China’s heartland through conquest, around 221-206 BC.

“This is the kind of thing you can’t really hide from people,” one worker told the Global Times. “Everyone’s got phones now. How can you cover this up?”

Photos of the toppled statue in Binzhou showed its centre was hollow, supported by a metal framework.

He built the first sections of the Great Wall of China, and his tomb is home to the famous army of thousands of terracotta soldiers.

The ill-fated pancake-faced statue at Binzhou was built in 2005 to attract visitors to a local tourism resort, according to the AFP news agency.
