Giant Sea-Based Radar Platform in the Pacific

x band

The U.S. Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX-1) is a floating, self-propelled, mobile active electronically scanned array early-warning radar station designed to operate in high winds and heavy seas. It was developed as part of the Missile Defense Agency’s Ballistic Missile Defense System.
The radar is mounted on a fifth generation CS-50 twin-hulled semi-submersible drilling rig. Conversion of the vessel was carried out at the AmFELS yard in Brownsville, Texas; the radar mount was built and mounted on the vessel at the Kiewit yard in Ingleside, Texas. It is nominally based at Adak Island in Alaska (though, as of April 2015 has never put into port at Adak). It has spent significant time at Pearl Harbor in test status.

SBX-1 is part of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system under development by the MDA. The decision to place the system on a mobile sea-based platform was intended to allow the vessel to be moved to areas where it is needed for enhanced missile defense. Fixed radars provide coverage for a very limited area due to the curvature of the Earth. However, the same limitation applies to the SBX. SBX’s primary task is discrimination of enemy warheads from decoys, followed by precision tracking of the identified warheads. Testing has raised doubts about the system’s ability to perform these tasks, to deal with multiple targets, and to report accurately to command authorities.
The vessel has many small radomes for various communications tasks and a large central dome that encloses a phased-array, 1,800 tonne (4,000,000 pound) X band radar antenna. The small radomes are rigid, but the central dome is not – the flexible cover is supported by positive air pressure amounting to a few inches of water. The amount of air pressure is variable depending on weather conditions.

In April 2013, it was reported that SBX-1 was being deployed to monitor North Korea
In November 2015, it was moved to Pearl Harbor for repairs and testing.
In January of 2017 the SBX-1 was deployed into the Pacific during North Korean threats of ICBM and nuclear attacks on other nations.

North Dakota Driver Thought the Speed Limit in Canada was 100 Miles Per Hour

Manitoba Speed Limit sign

A North Dakota resident found out the hard way this past weekend that kilometres and miles aren’t the same thing.

The driver was hit with a $940 ticket Sunday afternoon after being caught going 100 miles per hour in the RM of Dufferin on Highway 13, RCMP said.

RCMP’s radar gun caught the driver going 168 kilometres per hour, just over 100 mph, in a 100 km/h zone.

“It’s a tad excessive,” RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Paul Manaigre said.

While dangerous driving charges aren’t anticipated, Manaigre said Manitoba has reciprocity agreements with many states including North Dakota, meaning the driver’s licence or insurance could be affected back at home.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” Manaigre told CBC. “I’ve been policing the Emerson detachment for close to 15 years, so I’ve caught quite a few speeders … coming over from the States. You don’t see it often, but it does occur.”

Black Dynamite

Black Dynamite is a 2009 American blaxploitation action comedy film starring Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, and Salli Richardson. The film was directed by Scott Sanders and co-written by White, Sanders, and Byron Minns, who also co-stars.
The plot centers on former CIA agent Black Dynamite, who must avenge his brother’s death while cleaning the streets of a new drug that is ravaging the community. The film, which is a parody of the blaxploitation genre, had a trailer and funding even before a script was written. Black Dynamite was shot in 20 days in Super 16 format. The film was released in the United States on 16 October 2009 for only two weeks (with an ‘official’ premiere at the Toronto After Dark film festival) and was well received by critics. It was released on home video on February 16, 2010.

Some funny scenes. This movie has some side-splitting laughs.

Vladimir Putin: Myth versus Reality

Russian President Vladimir Putin is revered by his citizens, he is viewed as a strong and sly leader. He comes across as a karate black belt ex-super spy who will lead the Motherland to greatness and prosperity.  It is debatable if this is truly the case. He does appear to be pretty tough.

Lots of images of him swimming and riding horses shirtless. An outdoors-man with no fear. Very athletic and fit. Mr. Putin riding a Siberian brown bear is one of the most popular concocted images.
