NASA contest finalists show off their Mars habitat models

They’ll now have to build a one-third-scale version of their designs.

mars1

Yes, we’ve yet to successfully send humans to Mars, but we already need to start thinking how we can stay there for long stretches of time — or even for good. NASA launched the 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge back in 2015 to find a suitable artificial housing for the first wave of Martian residents, and now the agency has narrowed the contestants down to five after seeing the realistic virtual models they created. The agency and its project partner, Illinois’ Bradley University, judged 18 teams’ models created using a specialized software.

According to TechCrunch, the software requires various details about the structures creators are designing. In other words, the teams couldn’t just come up with a concept that looks good — they had to make sure their habitats’ wall thickness, heating, pressure sealing and other elements can actually withstand harsh Martian conditions.

The five teams split a $100,000 cash pot earmarked for this stage of the competition, with the two top teams taking home $20,957.95 each. One of the top teams, Zopherus from Arkansas, has envisioned a habitat built by moving 3D printers that can deploy rovers to retrieve local materials for construction.

AI. SpaceFactory of New York designed a cylindrical habitat for max space usage.

Team Kahn-Yates of Jackson, Mississippi, which got third place, features a design with translucent dots to let the light in. It was also created to withstand Mars’ massive dust storms.

SEArch+/Apis Cor from New York prioritized creating a habitat that lets the light in but can provide strong radiation shielding.

Finally, Team Northwestern University from Illinois has conjured up a design that features a spherical shell with an outer parabolic dome. They also want to make building one as easy as possible by using an inflatable vessel as base for a 3D printer, so it can quickly print out a dome with cross beams.

The five teams now have to prove their ideas are feasible by 3D printing — autonomously, that is — part of their structures and to create a one-third-scale version of their design. Monsi Roman, NASA’s Centennial Challenges program manager, said: “We are thrilled to see the success of this diverse group of teams that have approached this competition in their own unique styles. They are not just designing structures, they are designing habitats that will allow our space explorers to live and work on other planets.”

Columbia Drug Gang puts out Hit Contract on Sniffer Dog

Colombian sniffer dog moved after threats by drug gang

Her handler says Sombra is friendly to children but unforgiving in her search for drugs

A dog in Colombia which has sniffed out a record amount of drugs in her career with the counter-narcotics police force has been moved to ensure her safety.

Intelligence sources said the Urabeños drugs gang had put a 200m-peso ($70,000; £53,000) price on the German shepherd’s head after she found almost 10 tonnes of the gang’s cocaine.

The Urabeños is considered Colombia’s most powerful criminal organisation.

Sombra (Shadow) was moved from the gang’s heartland to Bogotá airport.

Drug traffickers’ scourge

Six-year-old Sombra had been deployed in ports on the Atlantic coast including Turbo, a town from which tonnes of cocaine are shipped by speedboat and sometimes by submarine to Central American and on to the United States.

Sombra sniffed out 5.3 tonnes of cocaine in Turbo and recently found another four tonnes stashed in car parts meant for export.

Sombra has taken part in more than 300 operations with the counter-narcotics police

Much of the drug trafficking is controlled by the Urabeños, a gang which is also known as the Úsuga clan or Gulf clan.

The gang’s boss, Dairo Antonio Úsuga also known as Otoniel, is one of Colombia’s most wanted men.

It is not unusual for the Urabeños to offer money to get rid of those standing in their way.

In 2012, police found leaflets signed by the gang offering $500 (£380) to anyone who killed a police officer.

The vastly bigger sum the Urabeños are offering for the killing of Shadow is indicative of the financial losses her sensitive nose has caused them.

Counter-narcotics police officers said Shadow was being well guarded by her handler and other officers, but that for the time being she would be safer on duty at El Dorado airport in the capital.

Sombra has been with the counter-narcotics police force since she was a puppy and is credited with sniffing out drugs leading to the arrest of 245 suspects.

Donald Trump’s Walk of Fame star destroyed in Hollywood

A suspect has been arrested after the president’s star, the target of previous attacks, was demolished with a pickaxe.

Donald Trump’s star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood has been destroyed.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the LAPD received a call from the man who allegedly took a pickaxe to the president’s spot on the strip in Los Angeles. Reports claim the suspect arrived with a guitar case before taking out the implement to destroy the star.

While he had fled the scene by the time officers arrived, he has since turned himself in and remains in police custody. A source claimed he would probably be charged with felony vandalism.

While there is private security in the area, they struggled to intervene as they do not possess the same powers as law enforcement officers.

It’s not the first time the star has been the target of an attack, with multiple incidents of vandalism. In 2016, James Lambert Otis, 53, was recorded using a jackhammer and a pick.axe to remove Trump’s name. He said he was motivated by the infamous Access Hollywood video in which the future president used lewd terminology to describe infidelity.

Otis was sentenced to three years’ probation, 20 days of community service and paid $4,400 for the damage.

The star has also been the subject of protest art, with a wall erected around it in 2016 to symbolize the president’s policy on immigration.

The strip in Hollywood features multiple stars dedicated to celebrities, with 2018 honorees including Jeff Goldblum, Jack Black, Kirsten Dunst and Zoe Saldana. Recipients are selected by a committee that considers applications throughout the year and stars are purchased for $30,000.

A quick fix was promptly carried out.

As a side note. Trump is in a major trade war with China. But it didn’t stop him from getting Trump 2020 flags made in the communist nation.
